I am Sick of Frida!
Frida Kalho used
to say the she had two accidents in her life: the first accident, the crash of
the bus that let her body in pain for the rest of life. Second accident,
meeting muralist painter Diego Rivera. As most Mexicans, is Fashion Designer Laura Reyes feeling that the
recently formed Frida Kalho Corp to
cement Kahlo as an upscale brand and out of the reach of most Mexicans (to buy
or to sell) has become Frida’s third
accident. Being a woman for the people, how would she feel about it? Maybe
and just as she reacted every time
that Diego made her upset: Would she get ride of her Mexican traditional
outfits? Her color, her femininity, her hair? Would not she be sick of Frida’s products by now?
“ I am sick of Frida Collection” (Estoy
harta de Frida!) is how fashion designer Laura Reyes will be opening the Mexican
Fashion Show at the Bazaar of Art and Alternative Design this Saturday, July 18
at 4 pm at Allende Cultural Center. Following by the presentation of Laura
Reyes’ Students First Collections: Elva Grandos’s “Mexica” and Griselda
Arroyo’s “Contemporary Maya”
“Mexica”
by Elva Grandos Highlights and integrates beauty and originality of the Mexica
culture. Simplicity and elegance found in Elvas’s Collection a space that
integrates perfect harmony between today’s Mexico and the Mexican essence,
carrying it proudly and naturally.
“Contemporary Maya” by Graciela Arroyo, expresses the
symbiosis between the past and present of Mexican-Mayan culture. Inspired by
the Mexican textile and geometric richness, the designer seeks to shift
the viewpoint of traditional clothing, updating the huipil, shawl and
traditional fabrics done in loom, transforming them into contemporary clothing for
the modern woman. The clothes reflect the sophistication of indigenous textile
techniques and aesthetics of minimalist clothing, breaking down the usual
stereotypes exported from Mexico.
